Marketing

We love making musical theatre: Writing, re-writing, working with actors and other creatives, re-writing, rehearsing, re-writing, having our work performed, table reads, workshops, choreography labs. More re-writing. And we loved making the concept album of our two-person musical comedy about marriage*. And Featuring Beth Leavel and Jeff Blumenkrantz.

It took about a year to make the album. (Figuring out how to get the music onto Spotify, Apple Music, etc., is the subject of a separate post.) But making the album itself was only the first half of the project. We are now involved in the second half of the project, which is doing everything we can to let people know it exists. In other words, marketing.

To market the album (and the show), we had a photographer/videographer present at some of the recording sessions. We also have a web designer, a graphic designer, a publicist, a social media specialist, and a person doing SEO (search engine optimization). Even though neither of us owns a CD player, we made CDs. (Which means we wrote liner notes.) We are in the process of making music download cards to distribute. We are renting space at the New York Regional Office of the Recording Academy — which has nothing to do with the album and in no way endorses it — to do a small launch event. Doing the event involves hiring security, licensed bartenders and a caterer, renting furniture and equipment, and, among other things, making sure each vendor has a certificate of insurance and makes the venue a “named insured.” You don’t know what that is or how to do that? Who does? Okay. I knew because I used to be a lawyer — but it’s still more work.

The bright side of needing all this help is the people we’ve met. All women, all wonderful and we’re grateful to know them and have their help. Like almost everything we’ve done in musical theatre, in the end, the best part is the people you meet along the way.

*Speaking of people you meet, our SEO person recommends we use the words, “ musical comedy about marriage…” when we talk about the show, so we are.
